Most Dubai callouts for an AC that has stopped cooling are not a fault in the unit. They are airflow. Working through the list below in order will tell you within five minutes whether you need a technician or a filter.
A loaded return filter is the single most common cause. It starves the coil of air, the coil ices, and less air reaches the room the harder the system works. Pull it out and hold it to the light — if you cannot see through it, that is your answer.
The return grille
Behind the filter sits the return. Furniture pushed against it, a curtain over it, or a closed door isolating the return from the rooms it serves all produce the same symptom as a broken unit.
Thermostat mode and setpoint
Fan mode instead of cool mode moves air without cooling it. In a villa with multiple thermostats, one left in fan mode makes a whole floor feel wrong.
Supply diffusers
Count how many are actually blowing. A closed or blocked diffuser in one room redistributes the load and makes another room cold while the first stays warm.
Ice on the pipework
Visible ice on the copper line or the indoor coil means airflow has already been restricted long enough to freeze the coil. Switch to fan only for an hour to thaw before anyone works on it.
Outdoor unit
If it is not running, or the fan is running but the compressor is silent, that is electrical or refrigerant, and it is a technician job. Do not keep cycling it.
What it means if the basics are fine
The four technical causes
Dirty evaporator coil
A felt of dust across the coil face acts as insulation. The refrigerant cannot absorb heat from air that never touches the fin surface. Chemical cleaning restores it; there is no shortcut.
Loaded blower wheel
Each blade of a squirrel-cage blower collects a curved ridge of dust. Once loaded, throughput can drop by half while the motor draws the same current. This is invisible without removing the blower and it is frequently missed.
Low refrigerant
A system does not consume refrigerant. Low charge means a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak means paying for the same gas twice. Ask for the leak to be located, not just the charge restored.
Duct leakage or a collapsed flexible run
Cooled air lost into a ceiling void never reaches the room. Common in villas after any ceiling work, and it shows up as one room that never gets there while the rest of the house is fine.
Questions
Answered plainly.
We prioritise no-cooling calls in summer and aim for same or next day across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Message on WhatsApp with your community and we will tell you honestly what the next slot is rather than promising a window we cannot hold.
Only if the ducts are actually the restriction. We diagnose first. Selling a duct clean to fix a failed capacitor is the kind of thing that gives this trade its reputation.
Almost always duct balancing, a closed or crushed flexible run, or a blocked diffuser in that room. It is rarely the outdoor unit, because a failing unit affects every room.
That is usually a system sized or charged just adequately, losing margin as ambient rises. Coil condition and refrigerant charge are the two things to check.
If there is visible ice, switch to fan only. Otherwise running it is fine, but if the outdoor unit is short-cycling, switch it off — repeated restarts damage the compressor.
Priced after an inspection. Fixed in writing.
Every job is scoped against a written checklist you keep, and the price does not move on the day unless you ask for work outside it. Part of AC Duct Cleaning — see also the written checklist.
No phone quotes. An inspection, a written list, and a price that does not move on the day. Fill this in and it reaches us complete — no back-and-forth to establish the basics.
