How to Prepare for Sofa Cleaning

The single most useful thing you can do before we arrive is find the cleaning code on the underside of your sofa. It decides the method, and getting it wrong is how upholstery gets ruined.

Written for Dubai and Abu Dhabi homes, where drying time in a humid month matters as much as the cleaning method itself.

Before we arrive

Three things worth doing

Find the care label

Usually under a seat cushion or on the base. Codes: W means water-based cleaning is safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, X means vacuum only. Photograph it and send it with your enquiry and we can quote accurately first time.

Empty the sofa

Remove throws, cushion covers you want laundered separately, and everything that has fallen down the sides. You will be surprised.

Clear a working perimeter

About a metre around the piece so it can be moved out and worked from all sides.

Point out the marks

Name each one and what caused it. Old marks that have already been treated with a supermarket product need to be declared — that residue reacts with professional chemistry.

Note anything structural

A loose leg, a broken recliner mechanism or a split seam. We photograph these before starting so nothing is disputed afterwards.

What decides the method

Why we test first, every time

Material

Cotton and polyester take extraction well. Velvet is never saturated. Suede and nubuck are solvent-only and water leaves a permanent tide line. Leather is cleaned and fed rather than washed.

Colourfastness

Tested on an unseen corner before anything else. Dark dyes on cheaper fabrics can transfer, and once they have you cannot put them back.

Filling

Foam holds moisture, feather holds odour. Both change the drying time and the amount of moisture we can safely use.

Age and previous cleaning

Repeatedly cleaned upholstery carries residue that attracts soil faster. Sometimes the right answer is a residue-removal pass before anything else.

Drying and afterwards

What to expect

Four to six hours

With air movement. Longer in a humid month or a closed room. Keep the AC running rather than opening windows.

Do not replace covers early

Damp foam under a fitted cover in a Dubai summer grows mould within days. Wait until it is dry to the touch at the seams, not just the surface.

Slight stiffness is normal

Fabric dries stiffer than it feels afterwards. It relaxes with use within a day or two.

Marks that reappear

Wicking from deep in the filling. Normal, and covered by the 72-hour return.

Questions

Answered plainly.

Yes. Built-in and majlis seating is cleaned in place. We just need working room around it.

Where the manufacturer intends it and the label allows. Many modern covers shrink on removal and we will not risk that without your agreement.

Once dry to the touch at the seams. Sitting on damp upholstery compresses the pile and can leave marks.

Yes. Non-toxic, low-residue products throughout, and the surface is safe once dry.

Cleaned and conditioned rather than extracted. Dubai's dry indoor air is what cracks leather, so feeding it matters more here than cleaning it.

Everything runs against a written list.

Scoped at an inspection, priced in writing, and signed off with you before the crew leaves. See the checklist or the full Sofa Cleaning scope.
