Wherever the fabric allows, curtains are cleaned hanging. Taking them down is where most shrinkage, distortion and hem damage happens, and refitting is rarely as neat.

More curtains are damaged by being taken down than by being left dirty. On-site cleaning exists for that reason.
By fabric
Blackout linings, sheers, velvet and linen each take a different method. Velvet is never saturated. Sheers need minimal moisture or they distort at the header.
The parts that hold dust
Headers, hems and the rail itself. A curtain that looks clean in the middle usually has a visible dust line at the top where nobody looks.
Drying
Air movement until dry. Damp lining in a closed, air-conditioned room is how curtains develop a persistent smell.
