Cleaning became a profession when buildings became complicated enough that occupants could no longer maintain them alone.
From domestic service to contracting
For most of history, cleaning was domestic labour attached to a household. The shift to contracted, specialist cleaning followed the growth of large commercial buildings, where scale and consistency mattered more than familiarity.
Mechanisation
The powered vacuum cleaner turned dust removal from redistribution into extraction. Later, rotary machines, hot-water extraction and steam did the same for floors and textiles — each one replacing effort with a method that measurably removed more.
Chemistry
Purpose-built surfactants, enzymes and pH-specific products replaced generic soap. The gain was that the right chemistry for a surface began to matter more than force, which is why product knowledge now separates a good crew from a fast one.
Standards and documentation
The most recent shift is the least visible: cleaning as something specified, measured and recorded rather than judged by appearance. That is where checklists and written scopes come from.
Everything we do is scoped against the written checklist, priced after an inspection and fixed in writing before any work begins.
Questions
Answered plainly.
Because 'clean' is subjective and a list is not. It makes the work comparable and makes disputes resolvable.
The chemistry and the measurement have improved more than the machinery. HEPA collection and residue-free products are the meaningful recent changes.
For scope, equipment and accountability, yes. For frequency and familiarity, a good regular arrangement can beat it.
No phone quotes. An inspection, a written list, and a price that does not move on the day. Fill this in and it reaches us complete — no back-and-forth to establish the basics.
